Italian Underground at the Biennale

The President of the Fondazione La Biennale di Venezia Davide Croff and the President of the Fondazione Prada Miuccia Prada presented in Venice at Palazzo Querini Dubois, the Storia Segreta del Cinema Italiano, project that was launched during the 1961 Mostra Internazionale d'Arte Cinematografica, dated from the 1st to the 11th of September 2004.

In the history of the cinema there are two versions: the official one taught to us and a secret one considered wrongly 'less important', where the real causes of events can be found. The Settore Cinema of the Biennale di Venezia with the support of the Fondazione Prada and other prestigious institutional partners intends to open a workshop for the recovery, restoration and systematic discovery of the Italian cinema - lost, invisible, unknown or underestimated: Storia Segreta del Cinema Italiano. The Mostra 2004 retrospective is therefore only the beginning of a process of study and re-proposal that will be organized in a calendar called Attività permanenti to continue over the span of four years and will further an in-depth and diversified study of the discoveries. The Storia Segreta del Cinema Italiano will recover for the 61st Exhibition a part of the 'rescue' work of the Italian Underground of the sixties. The first stage in fact envisages the restoration of films by Baruchello, Grifi and Scavolini

Nicola Mazzanti will be responsible for the general supervision and recovery in high definition. The greater task in the role of the 'Comitato Odinatore' of the Storia Segreta del Cinema Italiano was in fact entrusted to Morando Morandini and Pino Farinotti proposed again together with the films produced during the period of 1950 to 1970 while the programming of the Italian Kings of the Bs was instead proposed by Marco Giusti and Luca Rea. The more general project aimed to restore and recover all the so-called 'invisible'Italian cinematographic works, focusing on the philological character of each recovery during the underground years ranging from 1960 to 1970, of all the major authors that were forgotten and which have never been found to exist as artists that may be consulted.
